Miyako-jima island (Okinawa)

Miyako-jima is the heart island of Miyako Islands located in approximately 300 km southwest from Okinawa main island.

The cape of Higashi-henna-zaki

It's a promontory with 2km long and up to 160 m wide, jutting into the sea at the eastern end of Miyako-jima.

The promontory is made up of limestone of raised coral reef.  It's a nationally designated place of scenic beauty.

 Near the road is a rock which is a grave of Mamuya.

Mamuya is said to be a legendary beauty who threw herself into the sea here.

Miyakojima Tropical Botanic Garden


Adan (scientific name; Pandanus odoratissimus)      It's inedible for people, but said to be a favorite for coconut crabs.

Chinese hibiscus   In Okinawa it's called Akabana; aka (red), bana (flower)

Arriving at Kurima-jima island passing through Kurima bridge over the sea.  This is the observatory for Kurima bridge.

Islands around Miyako-jima island

Kurima bridge with 1,690m long.   The opposite side is Yonaha-maehama in Miyako-jima, a white sand beach with 7km long which is said to be the most beautiful beach in the Orient.

Yonaha-maehama is the start and goal of the triathlon race held in April annually.

Arriving at Irabu-jima island and Shimoji-jima island by ferry boat.  

The map shows Shimoji-jima is very very close to Irabu-jima.

Heading to Toori-ike, a pond situated at the western coast in Shimoji-jima, through a path in the grove.

Toori-ike pond      It's designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument in Japan.


This is a pond made of limestone eroded and its bottom is connected to the sea.

This is very popular for divers to move between the pond and the sea.
