Iriomote-jima & Yubu-jima (Okinawa)

Iriomote-jima is an island located at 450 km southwest from Okinawa main island, in Taketomi-cho, Okinawa prefecture.

Nakama River in Iriomote-jima    It has the Japan's largest mangrove area designated as a natural monument in Japan.

This mangrove area is said to account a quarter of all Japan.


Sakishima-suo-no-ki (scientific name ; Heritiera littoralis)          It's 18 m high and approximately 400-year-old.

The sea between both islands is up to 1 m deep even at full tide.

The entire Yubu-jima comprises a subtropical garden.

Mickey Mouse plant  (scientific name: Ochna serrulata)   Black fruits on the red calyx are associated with Mickey Mouse face.

It's said to be a native of South Africa.

The shore of Manta     The strait between Yubu-jima and Kohama-jima is said to be a passageway of Manta, 'Manta Way'.

Return to Iriomote-jima by water buffalo-drawn cart again.
